The SC Ag Council Winter 2015 Quarterly Meeting was held Thursday, February 26 at the SC Farm Bureau office in Cayce.

Patrick King from the SC Community Loan Fund spoke about the Feeding Innovation project and the Food Access Task Force Report with a legislative update.

Community Development in underserved communities was the emphasis of the presentation.
1)    Affordable Housing
2)    Community Facilities
3)    Community Business
4)    Healthy Food Financing

Of interest to the SC Ag Council was the fact that the SC Community Loan Fund “Feeding innovation Application” is currently underway with deadline approaching in March.

Feeding Innovation, an eight-week course, offers support and instruction to entrepreneurs founding or expanding farmers markets, mobile markets, corner stores and community-supported agriculture (CSA) in underserved areas. Participants will attend classes, learn about business plan development and participate in NxLevel training. In addition, each participant will connect with a business mentor who can offer one-on-one assistance outside the course.

The program culminates in a live pitch of a business plan to a panel of judges. The presenter with the strongest plan of an innovative, market-based idea, which also increases healthy food access, targets a community with limited access and incorporates community engagement receives seed capital for the business. In addition, if approved, the entrepreneur could qualify for business financing and assistance with accounting, marketing and other services.
