Message from the President Mikell

What a GREAT year we had in 2009 — meetings included programs about land management, peaches and the peach industry, how the recession of 2009 affected agriculture, and an overview of the livestock industry in SC.  In addition, we sponsored two tours: Diamond Pet Food, Rawls Farm, and State Street Snack Food in May; Gold Leaf Seed Company, Delta and Pine Land Company, Coker Farms National Historic Landmark, and Kalmia Gardens in October.

Our meetings this year are scheduled for February 11th, May 13th, August 12th and November 11th – all Thursdays.  Our tours are tentatively scheduled for Saluda County (hosted by Phil Perry) on April 21th and Brattonsville on October 5th.

After such a successful year in 2009, we are looking forward to 2010 with more great meetings and two more fun field trips planned. But, I’m sure you know that in order to continue these activities at a reasonable cost, we need your continued financial support and so it’s time to renew your Council membership. Fortunately, because of the support provided by you and other members this past year, our dues for 2010 will remain at $20.00. The Registration Fee for our quarterly meetings will also remain at $8.00 in advance and $12.00 at the door. Members will again have the option of prepaying the four quarterly meetings — the cost will be $25.00, which will save a few dollars. We will also continue the special Group Membership which is available for groups of five or more members. The Group Membership will include annual dues as well as prepayment for the four quarterly meetings and will be $40.00 per person (minimum – $200.00 for the group)   The group does not have to be a “formal” group so any five or more people can form a group — the only stipulation is that only one check be sent to pay for the Group Membership.

Please take a few minutes to renew your membership for 2010.  Print and complete the membership form and return it along with your check to the address shown, or simply send your name, address, phone numbers (work, home and cell) and email address along with your check.

NOW, I’m going to ask a special favor of you.  Please tell your friends and co-workers about the SC Agricultural Council.  Make a copy of the membership form or send them to this site.  Spread the word that the Ag Council is relevant to their job (if they work in the field of agriculture) and to their life personally if they eat food!  There is a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about agriculture because as we’ve become more urbanized we’ve lost our connection to farms. One of the main missions of the Ag Council is education, but we can’t educate if people don’t participate and come to our meetings.

If you have any questions, please respond by email, or contact Steve Slice at 803-806-3843 or

Thanks for your continued support of the Ag Council and South Carolina agriculture!
